Rihanna- What's My Name

Mise En Scene

The main aim of the music video is to promote the song, therefore all the shots contain Rihanna and Drake singing, and the locations and shots included in this isn't the main feature, they are mearly used to make the video more interesting. This doesnt mean the shots are irrelavent they to propose the lyrics and follow this but it is certainly not the main feature of the video. In fact the video was realeased in order to establish Rihanna's
'new look' therefore we see a lot of close ups of her, headshots etc in order to promote this.

Editing

Editing is quite slow and matches the pace of the video, for example natural wipes, and panning is used in order to change locations. Cuts are used although they are kept to a minimum due to the nature of them being a quite harse edit. Two shots are used frequently and completely match the lyrics and pace of the beat 'Oh na na' will contain one loacation and 'whats my name' will contain a different one through the use of a two shot creating a natural wipe.

'Oh na na..'
'...What's my name'

Camerwork

At the beginning of the video Rihanna establishes a location through a montage of shots, therefore immediately creating a narrative.

Extreme close ups are also used as a sense of enigma as well as being away of showing the closeness of the characters due to the narrative of the 'close up shot'

The video also contains a lot of blurry images and clips which allows a focus point of the clip and draws attention to that- therefore making it superior in the shot- this is usually because that character is the one sing ing at that time.

Close ups and extreme close ups of Rihanna's lips are also used a lot in the video- this is creating a seductive side to the video aswell as creating a build up of enigma.

Low angle and high angle shots of 'irrelevant' objects and goings on are also used in the video again possibly to create enigma and allow a pace to be created within the clips.
